A comment was made in another forum that our starting point guard from last game is a “plus defender.” My posts from earlier in the week, which look at on-court / off-court points per possession scored and allowed, would seem to put that claim to rest… as would his steal rate.
But the numbers were even more stark vs Oregon State. Indeed, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen numbers like this. The on-court / off-court points per possessions given up to Oregon State for our starting point guard were as follows:
On-Court: 1.16 pts/poss allowed
Off-Court: 0.69 pts/poss allowed
Kobe Johnson appeared to have a pretty impressive game on the defensive end. Let’s take a look at how we did on defense when our starting PG went to the bench and Kobe Johnson came in (and vice versa):
KJ in / EA out: 0.50 pts/poss allowed
KJ out / EA in: 1.25 pts/poss allowed
Reese Dixon Waters also had an impression game. Let's that a look at his on-court / off-court points allowed per possessions numbers:
RDW On-Court: 0.88 pts/poss allowed
RDW Off-Court: 1.43 pts/poss allowed
Of course, unlike Kobe, Reese is also a big positive factor on offense. Here are the on-court / off-court points scored per possessions numbers involving Reese:
RDW in / EA out: 1.12 pts/poss scored
RDW out / EA in: 1.03 pts/poss scored
Indeed, it gets scary when you combine offensive and defensive points per possession on EA's and Reese's on-court / court:
RDW out / EA in:
USC scored 1.05 pts/poss & allowed 1.45 pts/poss for combined -0.45 per combined off/def possession.
RDW in / EA out:
USC scored 1.12 pts/poss & allowed 0.72 pts/poss for combined +0.40 per combined off/def possession.
