  • Tre White & Jordan Pope upset No. 1 team in the country

On of the bigger upsets you’re gonna see. Prolific Prep knocks off No. 1 Sunrise Academy in the Geico National Champions, playing without Kansas’s MJ Rice and UCLA’s Adem Bona (both McDonalds All-Americans). Jordan Pope committed to Oregon State last night. Now Prolific plays Link Academy with Julian Phillips tomorrow.

I am wondering if somebody can explain these high school national rankings in high school basketball! I thought California's Corona Centennial was one of the top national teams, but I don't see or read anything about them in this tournament. Did I just miss it? I thought they lost only one game to Duncanville out of Texas.

I know that they smoked the team that features Bronny James, and the two McDonald's AA, Amari Bailey and Kejani Wright, Sierra Canyon and they lost by a few points to Duncanville who I thought was the number one team.

How many number one teams are there? Thanks for any input. MJD

      Michael,

These are chiefly the prep schools that play outside the customary state high school system.

Thanks Chase. I was not sure since Sierra Canyon did play Centennial. I wonder how Centennial would do against these Prep Schools. They don't seem to have all the big names, but that team can play some serious ball. MJD

Sierra Canyon played Prolific Prep and I think Oak Hill in a tournament back in the fall; Centennial and Gorman were also in it. This was when Amari Bailey was still hurt, so he didn’t play. Prolific Prep won (they Bona and Rice and also Dior Johnson, transferred to SoCal Academy), but it was close. Kijani played well.

            Chase:

Thank you so much for the update. I don't follow the high school schedule as closely as some, so this is very helpful. MJD

Loved the way White played. He was definitely the alpha out there and the team looked for him to lead and he did on BOTH ends of the court. Absolutely locked down Bradey Dick who is going to Kansas. White handled the ball as the team's point guard and dished out some nice passes. I believe White is the freshman who will contribute the most. BTW, I saw that two recruits haven't signed yet. Is there any problem?

                Marty:

With regards to two recruits not having signed yet, it depends on which site one refers to. One site says commitments, while the other says LOI signed. I believe that both White and Sellers have signed, but if not, it won't be the first or last time I have been WRONG, LOL MJD

I don’t believe they have signed or, if they have, SC is not treating them as signed. But I haven’t heard of any issues.

Chase: I think you are quite correct. Today, both sites, Fight on 24/7 and ON3 list two as signed and two as hard commits. Either I read one wrong initially---->the most likely explanation, or something has changed. I remember researching this extensively a few weeks ago and the answers were not crystal clear. I even tried to check high school sites because of the discrepancies. Did USC release an official list of early Basketball signees? I did read this on the Trojan Wire which I am quoting below.

"Coming off an Elite Eight appearance a season ago, Andy Enfield and the USC Trojans have the basketball program trending in the right direction. Maintaining success is usually found by landing big recruiting classes.

With national signing day here for basketball, Enfield and the Trojans have turned in what is a really good class early on. On Wednesday, USC signed its four-man class, which includes four-star recruits Vincent Iwuchukwu and forward Kijani Wright. The duo headlined the class, which also features four-star guard Tre White and three-star shooting guard Oziyah Sellers."

It will be interesting to see if anything changes in these kids' final destinations. I suppose there won't be unless there are issues that have not been noted up to this point. But it was articles such as the above which I quoted that has, at least in part, led to the uncertainty on my part. MJD

Chase, since I recall you mentioning in the podcast that Tre White plays the “point forward” role, do you think he can legitimately compensate for the thin PG depth we have in case we can’t get a major PG either in the portal or as an incoming freshman?

                    No, 2019.

Too much pressure. We’ll need a true PG.
