  • Comp for Julian Phillips

Been meaning to post this for a while. For those looking for a comp on Julian Phillips, we have a great one that hits home: Nick Young.

Phillips is a wee bit bigger and is slightly more athletic, but these guys are built similarly, have similar skills, and have a similar half court game.

This issue here is whether Phillips is worth it if he’s a confirmed one and done. Nick and I will discuss on the pod tonight.

He’s a take IMO. The rest of the recruiting class seem like multi year players, so if we can add someone who can produce like Nick Young even if he leaves in a year I’m totally good with it.

I like the Noodles comparison. He was a bit more shiftier than Julian but their games are similar. Nick played the 4 a lot alongside Taj who played the 5 and Nick was so great on the glass and iirc even got the best of Brendan Wright several times during their game vs UNC in the 2006 Sweet 16 matchup.

Remember, this would be Nick Young production as a freshmen, not as a junior.

That would still replace the scoring that Max and EA gave as part time starters. With more potential upside.

Ethan only averaged 7.5 points per 40 minutes. I don’t think replacing his scoring is any particular concern.

It’s more of an issue at filling a need on the court. To the extent we want to extrapolate from this year’s Final Four, one interesting thing is that 3 of the 4 teams (Duke, UNC and Villanova) really only use a 6-7 man rotation. So maybe our biggest priority is establishing those 7 guys we really trust. Could they be Drew, Reese, Boogie, Tre, portal PG, Isaiah or portal replacement and Kijani or Vincent? And, if so, how do we make sure those two open spots really fill our needs? Those are kind of rhetorical questions I guess.

Are the odds of him coming increasing now that Isaiah Mobley is leaving?

Have not heard a peep on Phillips for a few weeks now.

Interesting. Seems like his camp runs a tight ship since nobody was also able to gauge a prediction his first time around during his commitment.

Yep. Definitely seems to be the case.
