  • 2021 USC Team

I just want to say that our guys last year beat this same Kansas team by 34. Anyone that tries to compare the 2022 USC team to our 2021 USC team is full of shit. Special group that was

Same but different: Remy gives them a different dimension, and Abaji is MUCH improved.

Other returning Kansas players have all played better as well.

I would agree that the tippy top of the sport was better last year than this year: Gonzaga/Baylor last year would run any time in this year's field out of the gym.

In that respect, however, UCLA is quite a conundrum - how did they return everyone from last year and *not* significantly improve?

Evan Mobley (and really Big O before him too), opened up a lot more for the rest of the team to create. You couldn’t ignore them, whereas Our best players this season were not only not as talented (not a knock on them-just obviously no first rounders on this team), but also inconsistent and one dimensional in how they score.

Juzang got insanely hot. He didn’t stay hot this year. But UCLA is in the Final Four again (even with Jaime dinged up) if Mick doesn’t completely give the game away.

Quick note on Remy: he didn’t help Kansas at all today.

Braun, Wilson, Agbaji and Harris all got better. Think Remy is fine but nothing spectacular. Self is tremendous, but we whooped these guys last year.

Top of the sport should be down again. Best players in the class are Lively, Filipkowski and Whitehead at Duke. That's a downgrade to me from Banchero, Williams and Griffin. Moore and Keels are pretty good for them too and they'll declare barring great NIL offers. Big time window for us

Jason Scheer is floating the idea of Mathurin returning next season with some gigantic NIL deal.

I suppose we have all heard of the Alabama football player's mother who supposedly objected vociferously when her son decided to leave Bama early to go pro. She maintained that the pay cut he would receive was just unaffordable. I guess with some of the current and soon to be future NIL deals, such complaints on the part of parents (and players I suppose) will be all too truthful. I think things are out of hand and about to get worse, I guess only time will tell. MJD

I'm with you Michael though USC will really benefit from NIL. IMO, things are way out of hand already.

Michael, after nearly 20 years of watching kids leaves school early only to go undrafted and end up making $24K in the G League or having to try to scrape together a living overseas, I actually think NIL is starting to add some balance and possibly return the sport to where it was in the ‘90s.

Now the transferring thing is a whole nother can of worms.

The question is how much is NIL from USC basketball currently worth to someone who isn’t a clear 1 and done type player that brands would want to sign endorsement deals with?

We play most our games on the terrible pac-12 network in a mostly half full (at best) arena against mostly weak competition.

Does USC basketball have a bigtime donor willing to step up?

I don't know all the details and a lot of this is kept largely under wraps, but Isaiah Mobley is represented by Wasserman for his NIL stuff; Boogie has at least one prominent sponsor via Tom Brady's apparel company and did a commercial shoot for BYLT Basics; even Ethan was getting some NIL money.

Here's a video Annenberg did back in October:

Perhaps, but more transfers and more players staying an extra year can put a team at the top of the sport. Baylor won with 3-4 year players and even Ayayi, Timme, Kispert, Nemhard were all multi-year players for Zaga.

The key, as you said, is we don’t know the details. I would guess a lot of these deals are just for free product. Even then, none of that jumps off the page as “wow! I think I’ll stay at/go to SC!” If I was a star player.

Plus, how much reach are they really getting if I had no idea the deals even existed? We just can’t compete right now in the NIL field. Keep winning, pac-12 gets a new tv deal in 2024, and keep putting people in the league? There’s certainly a lot of potential with that being in LA…

Yeah, I just disagree with you on this one.

First, unless we’re talking about a vehicle lease or use of high end apparel, I don’t free product as much of anything. Even Ethan is getting NIL cash.

Also, a major aspect of these NIL deals is that they aren’t widely known by the public. Caleb Williams’s major NIL deal is with a private equity firm; it’s not something being pitched to the general public.

The TV deal aspect of this is a red herring. SC plays the lion’s share of its Pac-12 games on an ESPN channel or FS1. All told, SC played on an ESPN, Fox or CBS/Turner station 21 times this season. That’s no different than your average SEC or Big XII team.
