  • Overweight players and no point guard

Unfortunately, that’s the story of this team right now.

I don't understand. Is the overweight thing that obvious? This would be something a head coach should have a good feel for. I haven't heard this from Rueben or heard this suggested by anyone's that's watched the practices - how could this just be getting out? Interested to hear your comments on the game...

Not sure how this was missed. But Reese, Boogie, and Malik are all clearly overweight. It’s really affecting Reese and Boogie.

Chase, I agree. Especially Boogie. I had to remember that he changed his number because when I first saw #5 I had to double check that it was him.

I wonder if you guys saw Stanford play Wisconsin. To my eye, SC's guards are not significantly different in size than the guys who played in that game. Both Reese Dixon Waters and Malik Thomas look muscled up to my eye. I guess they are both over their ideal basketball weights, but when going down the lane against big, physical teams, I think their strength and muscle will serve them well. I also don't think Boogie Ellis looks significantly slower than he has in the past.

In years gone by, SC's guards have lost the ball and fallen down time and time again when driving in the lane. I think their added bulk/strength might be a worthwhile change. I am not saying their overall weight is not up. I am saying that I am not convinced that the change is all that bad.

Now, as far as not having a point guard-----no argument on that one. I guess only time will tell how this season will play out. Personally, I have major concerns and I hope they are for not. I would not be surprised if this team really struggles in conference, but I hope to be dead wrong. MJD

Michael, when Reese showed up in 2021 he had the same over-muscled issue. It affected his mobility quite a bit, and he moved a lot better after trimming down for last season.

              Chase:

Thanks for the input. If the muscled-up approach already failed in Reese's case, then I guess he will benefit by trimming down and perhaps doing more isometrics and aerobics as opposed to bulk building lifting if that is what he has been doing. Having said that, particularly with the current lineup, the Trojans might still benefit from his strength. Kijani Wright is plenty strong, but he seems to be giving up a couple of inches to the guys he will constantly be battling on the inside. As stated, I think this could be a rather interesting season, and that is not necessarily going to be in a positive slant. I guess only time will tell. MJD
