  • A few notes on last night's results

-- The big win last night pushed USC back into the Top 25 of Sagarin and the Top 20 of KenPom and the NCAA Net; that's an important place to be when seed selection time comes for the Tourney.

-- With Baylor winning in OT and Illinois crushing Michigan, the No. 1 Seeds seem pretty close to set with Gonzaga (No. 1 overall), Baylor, Michigan and Illinois. The only other team I could see slipping in there would be Houston.

-- You've gotta hand it to Dana Altman. The guy is a machine. Notwithstanding that First Half crushing at the Galen Center, Altman has managed to win Oregon's other 9 games since Chris Duarte returned. When Duarts has been healthy, Oregon is 17-3, with two of those losses coming while Will Richardson was still out. Assuming Oregon beats the Beavers on Saturday, Altman will have his 4th Pac-12 regular season title in the last six seasons.

-- After an 8-game stretch during the middle of Pac-12 play where Drew Peterson averaged 6 points/gm and shot under 30% from the field, he has now had 3 out of 4 really good games -- averaging 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, while shooting over 50%, in those three good games. With those performances, Peterson has managed to somewhat stabilize his FG% in conference play at 40%; still not great, but not as ugly as it was a couple weeks back.

-- Evan, on the other hand, has struggled the last four games, averaging 11 points per game, while shooting 44% from the field (including 0-4 from three), and 6.6 rebounds and one block per game. It's not dreadful by any means, but for a guy contending for Pac-12 POY, the numbers are a big step down.

-- Speaking of last night, USC's defense was stellar for the first time since the First Half vs. Oregon, but ... WOW ... Stanford looks like a program in crisis. Granted, by far its best player, Oscar Da Silva is hurt. But the two upperclassmen starting guards for the Cardinal (Daejon Davis and Bryce Wills) were both, apparently, benched. The resulting product on the court was as bad as I can remember from a Stanford team since those early post-Adam Keefe season from Mike Montgomery. While Da Silva (and Ziaire Williams) have been likely to bolt for the NBA following this season, there was good reason to think Davis and Wills might be back next season to help build around Jaiden Delaire and incoming blue chippers Harrison Ingram and Isael Silva; but now that seems rather tenuous for Wills and downright far-fetched for Davis.

-- How important is Saturday's game at Pauley? Assuming Colorado handles ASU tonight, the winner of that game will finish in 2nd Place (possibly 1st), while the loser will finish 4th in the Conference.

I heard Haase's post-game news conference. He said Davis and Wills were injured but I thought he was evasive and moved away from the question pretty quickly.

Maybe Wills is injured. Hard to believe Daejon is injured considering Haase benched him against Oregon State.
