  • Familiar Territory in the Elite 8: the No. 1 Overall Seed

This is the second Elite Eight for USC in my lifetime. The last one in 2001, I remember very well, my final year of law school in Chicago, was against Duke, the eventual National Champion. Duke was preseason No. 1 in many polls that year, spent the entire season in the AP Top 3 (usually at No. 1), and the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The game was on Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Now, nearly 20 years later to the day -- twenty years, six days, to be precise -- USC is back in the Elite Eight, this time now facing the preseason No. 1, a team that has been Top 2 in every major poll all season (and No. 1 in every AP poll), and the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Sounds familiar? This time the game will take place on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Whatever happens ... let's hope that it doesn't take another 20 years to get back to the Elite 8, and, when SC does it, it isn't facing the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Probably worth mentioning that the personnel for Duke isn't that far off from the team SC plays tonight: multiple All-Americans, including at point guard, and multiple projected NBA picks.

That Duke team was so good that future NBA all star Carlos Boozer came off the bench for them...as a sophomore.
