  • USC had a secret scrimmage with Grand Canyon this morning

SC outscored GCU in both halves. Mid way through the 2nd Half SC had its biggest lead at 16. Final margin was about 10 points.

EA, Boogie, Drew, Isaiah M and Vez started. Max, Isaiah W., and Josh got the most minutes off the bench, with Reese and Boubicar (who fouled out) in the rotation. Malik, Kobe and Harrison basically played garbage minutes.

I didn’t see the game, but Isaiah M and Max were the leading scorers. Isaiah M and Vez were the leading rebounders. Isaiah White actually led the team in assists.

Team overall shot well from behind the arc on low volume. Boogie hit a pair of 3s. FT shooting was pretty good outside of Boubicar.

Overall the team shot pretty well from the field; Ethan and Joshua were the exceptions.

Vez, Isaiah M, Drew, Boogie and Max all scored between 11 & 15 points.

Biggest red flag was the number of turnovers from Isiah M and EA. Also, SC did not rebound particularly well against the smaller GCU team. SC wasn’t great in guarding the 3-point line either.

On the plus side, SC had a lot of blocks and held GCU to about 35% from the field.

As a reminder, GCU made the NCAA Tourney last season with an auto bid, but lost to Iowa by 12 in the first round.

GCU only has one starter back from that team, but they’ve added Holland Woods, Taeshon Cherry and Aidan Igiehon. None of them did much in the way of scoring.

One thing SC is gonna need to improve on is defensive rebounding. GCU grabbed about 40% of the rebounds on their missed shots. It was the reason GCU took about 15% more shot attempts than SC did.

Ethan consistently poor shooting in past scrimmages; Max consistently strong shooting in recent scrimmages and reports.

EA with the turnovers is not a good sign; he's running out of redeeming qualities.

Boogie has consistently scored ~ 20 pts during 'in house' scrimmages so I wonder if he slipped here, simply took on more of a distributor role, or just got less playing time. Prob the later...

Are you guys buying the Max hype yet - or just cautiously optimistic?

I imagine most of these questions will be covered on the pod... Thanks!

I appreciate the post Chase, love to hear about the team.

Sounds like there’s work to be done, glad they had a scrimmage to see where they currently stand.
