In an impressive defensive effort, the Trojans take it to the new-look 49ers. The OC Register’s Eric Stephens picks it up from there:
Eric Wisehad 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead a balanced USC attack as the Trojans held Long Beach State without a field goal for nearly 16 minutes of the second half in an easy 62-44 victory Monday night at Galen Center.
USC improved to 2-0 as its depth and defense were too much for Long Beach. J.T. Terrrell and Ari Stewart each added 10 points as 10 different Trojans got on the scoresheet.
A three-pointer by James Ennis and a free throw by Mike Caffey helped the 49ers forge a 35-35 tie. But Ennis’ jumper was their last field goal until 38.1 seconds were left.
In that time, USC took full control. Backup point guard Chass Bryan provided a spark as he sank consecutive jump shots for a 48-37 lead with 10:29 remaning.
Caffey led Long Beach (1-1) with 17 points. The 49ers, who host North Carolina on Friday, opened their season Saturday with a 75-65 home win over North Alabama.
