The Hoop Summit is an annual all-star game sponsored by Nike that matches the top high school players in North America, dividing the team by Team USA and the international players for “Team World.”
Vincent Iwuchukwu started at Center for the international team.
I was very curious how Vince would show in a game like this, given his underwhelming stint at Montverde Academy and his intermittent play for the SoCal Academy.
Team USA was loaded up with most of the top players in the 247sports composite rankings: Derek Lively, Kyle Filipowski, Dariq Whitehead (all heading to Duke), Keonte George (Baylor), Nick Smith & Anthony Black (Arkansas), Dillon Mitchell (Texas), Grady Dick (Kansas) and Amari Bailey (UCLA).
But far and away the best player on the court was Cam Whitmore out of Maryland, who is heading to Villanova. He’s a wing/forward hybrid who can shoot and slash and finish at the basket. He will kill it for Jay Wright.
Team World didn’t have quite the elite firepower of Team USA, but it did have by far the best lead guard in Jean Montero, who left high school to play for the all but invisible Overtime Elite league. Montero is incredibly fast twitch with a tremendous change of direction and an elite handle. He also was able to execute the pick n roll at a very high level. More on that later. His shot does need some work. But if Montero was playing college ball with this group, I’d easily project him as a Top 10 if not Top 5 overall pick.
Speaking of the pick n roll… Montero’s ability to execute the p’n’r got Vince several great shots at the rim, which he mostly finished on. Vince scored 7 of Team World’s first 15 points before running into some foul trouble. When he got back it, his team was mainly taking jumpers. Vince finished with 9 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field.
Vince is probably at the skill level right now of Boubacar, but probably 4 inches taller, a noticeably wingspan and a slightly better vertical. He’s a work in progress, who will likely end up in the NBA. He was active on defense with a couple steals and a couple blocks.
