  • How good are we?

I know our strength of schedule isn't great, so it's a bit harder to accurately gauge how good we are. However, through 14 games, I think I can confidently say we are a good team, at least good enough to make some noise in the tournament. I just worry that there's a bit of my own bias in there. This team is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. They went through periods today where they hardly resemble the team that got to this point, especially at the end. Goodwin in foul trouble affected us. But most importantly, the free throw shooting .... I'm not sure if it's just me watching only USC and thus have no point of reference, OR if we truly are poor free throw shooters if you compared us to rest of Pac-12. It just seems like we miss an awful lot of important free throws.

I would also argue that Arizona and UCLA haven't played anyone either - their marquee wins over Michigan and Villanova don't look as impressive today as they did at the time. I hope the team re-groups, as it's still early and there's still two more important games this week and not a lot of time to dwell on this loss. I still think the Pac-12 title goes to one of us, UCLA or Arizona.

We’re pretty good. Not elite, but we’re a good team

The inability to shoot FTs is a constant. What disturbed me in today's game, was the inability to hit almost any shot. They had a lot of open looks. If teams are going to clog the middle against our bigs and foul without fear of made FTs then USC must be able to hit the open outside shots. Admittedly, this was a really bad game in every respect, but if Mobley is the only player we have with a moderately consistent outside shot then we are destined to lose a number of the games on the schedule. I hope some of next year's recruits can shoot!

Our weakness is definitely guard play and specifically our guards and wings hitting open 3s.

Baylor lost, so no more unbeatens.

I did look up Pac-12 free throw shooting rankings, we are dead last and it's a size-able gap to #11:

          1. Utah 78.6%
          2. WSU 75.2%
          3. Arizona 72.3%
          4. Colorado 72.2%
          5. Cal 72.2%
          6. UCLA 69.4%
          7. ASU 68.9%
          8. Washington 67.1%
          9. Oregon State 67.1%
          10. Stanford 65.4%
          11. Oregon 64.3%
          12. USC 60.7%
