And that is a perfectly logical decision considering how he pulled the team out of the nosedive after the Stanford game, and the apparently very big buy out.

My question is has this ever worked with any coach? Has any coach deep into their tenure at a school had a bottom-out year but then bounced back to be as good or better than their peak years? I would love to hear a lot of examples of such so I can be enthusiastic about next year, but right now it feels like wishful thinking

Larranaga had a couple down seasons before turning it back around, Calipari if you count the 2020 season, Mike Brey had a down season before their run

I'm sure there's some other examples but a full roster refresh that we're headed for next year feels like a pretty good final test

It almost never does. Basketball is especially weird since individual players can produce strong outlier impacts so it's unclear where a "peak" actually is.

But in almost ANY sport, if a coach doesn't look like they're doing well, it typically doesn't end well. Just look at our football program after Pete Carroll. Look at Alex Grinch lol, we all knew it was going nowhere.

Counter-example - Penny Hardaway, kinda, was definitely a hot seat coach, then had a couple teams playing pretty good ball, but got bad draws in the tourney. This year Penny was weak again though.

There's a great quote that goes like "when someone tells you who they are, listen to them" - Andy has told us who he is, he's a "pretty good" coach. Not a great coach. If the school wants to take a risk and shell out the big bucks for a great coach, I'm all for it.

Larranaga is probably the best example. Of course he had a major NIL figure behind his program.

The difference with Calipari is that he had already signed up a bunch of new guys post-2021.

Just wait till Andy hits the B10 - it will make the P12 look like a walk in the park.

I understand the buyout is huge, but please explain why I should be excited for next season. Unless Andy strikes GOLD in the portal, there is no way USC can avoid being near the bottom of the standings next season.

Please let me know when USC learns how to inbound the ball without throwing it to the other team
