  • Hoop Math data

Numbers nerd here. My favorite basketball data destination is Hoop Math. They have all kinds of great data. One data set they have is what teams’ efficiency offense and defense based on how a possession starts. USC is at its most efficient on offense when it shoots within 10 seconds of the other team scoring. But the team doesn’t do that much. The team is also efficient when shooting more than 10 seconds after the other team scores. The team is slow efficiency when starting a possession after a defensive rebound and waiting more than 10 seconds to shoot.

    Interesting.

So, based on this, our offense gets less efficient the longer we hold onto the ball during a possession. And, of course, our defense gets better the longer we force opposing teams to hold onto a possession. So the key both ways is early offense.
